Turkey tail
Trametes versicolor
Meet turkey tail, the woodland fungus with delicate fans and colourful bands. Explore its different preparations and discover its place alongside four other mushrooms in our dual-extract tincture.
What is turkey tail?
Turkey tail is the common name for Trametes versicolor, a small bracket fungus with thin, fan-shaped layers and bands of colour. Those overlapping fans resemble a turkey’s spread tail feathers, giving the mushroom its memorable name.
It grows on dead wood, including hardwood stumps and branches. Its tough texture and layered shape make it very different from the soft, familiar mushrooms used in everyday cooking.

A closer look at the banded mushroom
Turkey tail’s bands can include shades of brown, cream and grey. The thin brackets often overlap in groups, making the contrast between their edges and darker bands particularly striking.
These visible brackets are fruiting bodies. Mycelium, the thread-like growth of the fungus, is another part of the organism. When comparing mushroom ingredients, check which material a specification actually names.
The photograph-style illustration below helps introduce the mushroom’s appearance. It does not confirm the source material or proportions used in a particular bottle, and it is not a guide to identifying wild fungi.

From mushroom material to a finished preparation
Turkey tail can appear in several product formats. A dried mushroom, a milled powder and an extract describe different preparations, even when they share the same mushroom name.
- Dried material: mushroom material that has been dried, with its own preparation instructions.
- Milled powder: material reduced to a powder; check the label for the part used.
- Extract powder: a dried extract, which is different from simply milling the material.
- Liquid extract: a preparation in a liquid medium, used according to its finished-product directions.
Our turkey tail ingredient appears in a blended liquid extract. We do not supply it through this product as loose mushroom pieces or a single-ingredient powder.
For a useful comparison, read the preparation and serving information together. A spoonful of powder cannot be converted directly into drops of tincture without supporting product-specific information.
What dual extraction means
Our Five Mushroom Dual Extract Tincture uses both water and alcohol in its preparation. Turkey tail is combined with reishi, chaga, lion’s mane and cordyceps; alcohol and purified water are also listed in the formula.
“Dual extraction” describes the use of two extraction media. It does not mean double strength or give a measured level of any particular mushroom constituent.
The current listing does not declare individual mushroom proportions. Five named mushrooms should not be interpreted as an equal 20% share of each.
Read our guide to alcohol in tinctures for more about the liquid medium. Adding a serving to water or juice does not make it alcohol-free.

A useful specification goes beyond the common name. Look for the species, source material, preparation method and declared amount in the finished product.
Our current listing names turkey tail but does not state an extraction ratio, fruiting-body percentage or laboratory-measured constituent level. Those details should come from documentation for the actual product, rather than from a general description of the mushroom.
Similarly, a dark liquid does not establish concentration, and a large bottle does not establish a higher amount per serving. Bottle volume, extract ratio and constituent percentage describe different things.
If you need an undeclared detail before ordering, contact us. Keep any comparison focused on information supplied for the specific preparation.
Using and storing your tincture
Follow the directions printed on your bottle and do not exceed the labelled amount. Shake gently as directed. Use the instructions for this five-mushroom blend rather than copying a serving from a single-mushroom product.
Store securely closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Keep the dropper clean and retain the original label so the directions and batch details remain available.
The product listing advises seeking appropriately qualified advice before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when taking medication or under medical supervision. Suitability depends on the whole formula.
If you already use other mushroom preparations, check their ingredient lists for overlap. Sharing an ingredient does not make two blends interchangeable.
Turkey tail questions answered
What is turkey tail?
Turkey tail is Trametes versicolor, a bracket fungus recognised by its thin fans and concentric bands of colour.
Which product contains turkey tail?
Our Five Mushroom Dual Extract Tincture lists turkey tail alongside reishi, chaga, lion’s mane and cordyceps.
Is your tincture a pure turkey tail extract?
No. It is a five-mushroom blend in alcohol and purified water.
What does dual extract mean?
Both water and alcohol are used in preparing the mushroom tincture. The term does not mean double strength or specify a measured constituent level.
Are all five mushrooms present in equal amounts?
The current listing does not declare equal proportions, so a 20% share of each mushroom should not be assumed.
Is the liquid extract the same as mushroom powder?
No. Powder and liquid extract are different preparations. Follow the directions for the particular product rather than transferring servings between them.
