Lugol’s Iodine 15% is a concentrated, traditional water-based iodine solution combining elemental iodine and potassium iodide in steam-distilled water. Supplied in a 50ml amber glass dropper bottle, this three-ingredient formula contains no alcohol or added preservatives. Read the bottle directions before use. This page does not give a drop count.

Also available in the Complete Iodine Companion Bundle — Lugol’s Iodine 15%, Celtic sea salt, Liposomal Advanced Immune Support and a downloadable guide.

Why this Lugol’s solution

This is the traditional three-part Lugol’s preparation: elemental iodine, potassium iodide and water. It is water-based, so it is not an alcohol tincture, and it is not a product that contains only potassium iodide. The 15% figure is the labelled strength of this 50ml amber dropper bottle. A different kind of iodine product is not automatically a weaker or stronger choice. It is a different product, and the bottles should not be swapped.

What is Lugol’s iodine?

Elemental iodine and iodide

Elemental iodine and iodide are related forms of the same element. They are not the same chemical. This solution contains both: elemental iodine, and iodide supplied as potassium iodide, in steam-distilled water. Potassium iodide is there because elemental iodine does not dissolve well in water by itself.

Where the name comes from

The solution takes its name from the French physician Jean Lugol, who described an aqueous iodine and potassium iodide preparation in 1829. This bottle follows that three-part idea. The historical note is not a treatment claim, and it is not evidence for a particular dose.

What 15% does and does not say

Iodine is an essential nutrient. That does not make a concentrated solution a suitable daily supplement for everybody. A bottle labelled 15% is not interchangeable with one labelled 2%, 5% or another strength. This page does not translate 15% into milligrams per millilitre, milligrams per drop, or an iodine-to-iodide ratio.

How to use

Read the directions supplied with the bottle before use. This page does not give a drop count, a dilution or a schedule. A 15% solution is concentrated, and it is not presented here as a routine daily supplement for everybody. If you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid-related medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are considering it for a child, take individual advice from a suitably qualified practitioner first.

No dose on this page

Do not take a drop count or a dilution from this page, or from a lower-strength product.

Storage

Storage

Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat and strong light, and out of children’s reach. Iodine can stain skin, clothing and surfaces. Close the dropper when you have finished, and wipe up spills promptly.

Cool, dark and closed

Keep the original amber bottle tightly closed, away from heat and strong light.

Out of children’s reach

This is a concentrated solution. Store it where children cannot open it.

It can stain

Skin, cloth and work surfaces can take a brown iodine mark. Wipe spills straight away.

Frequently asked questions

What is Lugol’s iodine solution?

Lugol’s iodine is a traditional water-based solution of elemental iodine and potassium iodide. This Crystal Health & Beauty bottle is the 15% solution, supplied as 50ml in amber glass with a dropper. It is a concentrated preparation, not an iodine tincture and not a potassium-iodide-only product. The directions that apply are the ones supplied with the bottle. This page does not add a dose of its own.

What is the difference between iodine and iodide?

Iodine and iodide are related forms of the same element, and the names are not interchangeable. Elemental iodine is the molecular form. Iodide is the charged form, supplied here as potassium iodide. This bottle contains both, dissolved in steam-distilled water. A product that lists only potassium iodide is a different preparation from Lugol’s solution, even when both are sold as iodine.

Why does Lugol’s solution contain potassium iodide?

Elemental iodine dissolves poorly in water on its own. Potassium iodide is included because it helps that iodine stay in solution. That is the traditional reason for the three-part formula of elemental iodine, potassium iodide and water. It is not a flavouring, a preservative or an alcohol. This page does not state the ratio of elemental iodine to potassium iodide.

What does 15% Lugol’s iodine mean?

15% is the strength named on this bottle, and that label is what marks the solution as high-strength. This page does not convert 15% into milligrams per millilitre, milligrams per drop, or an iodine-to-iodide split. That basis has not been confirmed from a label reading here. Sellers also count a Lugol’s percentage in different ways, so use this bottle rather than a chart written for another product.

Is 15% Lugol’s iodine stronger than 2% or 5%?

The figure printed on this bottle is 15%, which is a higher labelled number than 2% or 5%. Those are different products and they are not interchangeable. Do not assume one drop of this bottle equals one drop of a lower labelled strength, and do not treat a higher percentage as proof of a better result. Compare the label in front of you, because not every seller calculates the percentage in the same way.

Is Lugol’s iodine the same as iodine tincture?

No. An iodine tincture is typically iodine dissolved in alcohol. This solution is water-based: elemental iodine and potassium iodide in steam-distilled water, with no alcohol added. The ingredients, the bottle and the labelled strength differ from a tincture, so the two should not be swapped. Alcohol-free describes this formula. It does not describe every iodine product.

What ingredients are in this formula?

Three ingredients are stated for this bottle: elemental iodine, potassium iodide and steam-distilled water. Nothing else is named for the 50ml solution, SKU CHB_883. Check the label on the bottle you receive if you need to compare it with another product you already use. This page does not add ingredients that are absent from that list.

Does this Lugol’s solution contain alcohol, preservatives or added flavourings?

No alcohol is added, and no preservatives are added. No flavourings are listed either. The liquid is the three-ingredient solution in a UV-protective amber glass bottle with a dropper. That is a description of this formula, not a claim about iodine tinctures or about other brands.

How much solution is included and what bottle does it come in?

The bottle contains 50ml of solution. It is UV-protective amber glass fitted with a dropper, so less light reaches the liquid during storage. Check that the bottle you receive is labelled 15% and 50ml. The volume is the amount of solution in the bottle. It is not a milligram measure of elemental iodine.

How should I store Lugol’s iodine?

Keep the cap tightly closed, store the bottle away from heat and strong light, and keep it out of the reach of children. Leave the solution in its original amber bottle rather than pouring it into a clear container for everyday storage. If the seal is damaged, or the liquid looks unexpected, do not use it. Any date printed on the bottle is the one to follow. This page does not add a separate shelf life.

Can iodine stain clothing, skin or work surfaces?

Yes. Elemental iodine can leave a brown mark on skin, clothing and hard surfaces, and those marks can be difficult to remove. Use the dropper over a surface you can wipe, and close the bottle as soon as you have finished. A stain is a handling effect of the liquid. It is not a sign that the solution is working, and it is one reason to keep the bottle away from children.

Can I use a different strength in place of this 15% formula?

Not automatically. A bottle labelled 2%, 5% or any other strength is a different solution. Do not dilute this 15% bottle to imitate another strength, and do not substitute one drop for another. This page does not give a dilution ratio or a conversion. If you already use another iodine product, follow that label rather than combining the two from this answer.

Where can I find directions and how do I know whether it is suitable for me?

Use the directions supplied with the bottle. This page does not give a drop count, a daily amount or a schedule, and a 15% solution is not a routine supplement for everybody. If you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid-related medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are considering it for a child, take individual advice from a suitably qualified practitioner first. Iodine being an essential nutrient is not a reason to start this concentrated solution unsupervised.

What is included in the Complete Iodine Companion Bundle?

The Complete Iodine Companion Bundle is a separate product. Its current listing includes this Lugol’s iodine 15% 50ml bottle, organic coarse Celtic sea salt 500g, Liposomal Advanced Immune Support, and a downloadable guide. Those companions are optional. You do not need the bundle in order to buy or store this iodine, and the bundle does not set a combined iodine dose.

Can iodine and vitamin C be mixed together?

Ascorbic acid, the form of vitamin C in many supplements, can chemically reduce elemental iodine to iodide. Mixing them therefore changes the form of the iodine in the liquid. This is a note about that reaction, not a method. It does not give a mixing ratio, a waiting time or a regimen. If you use both, follow each product label on its own.
