Cordyceps
One of five mushroom extracts
Explore cordyceps, a name with a long place in Asian wellbeing traditions. Understand species and preparation differences, and discover how it appears in our Five Mushroom Dual Extract Tincture.
What does cordyceps mean?
Cordyceps is a name used across mushroom and wellbeing products, but it does not always describe the same material. Two names you may encounter are Cordyceps militaris and Ophiocordyceps sinensis, formerly known as Cordyceps sinensis. They are different species.
The name has a long association with Asian wellbeing traditions. Modern preparations include cultivated material, powders and liquid extracts, so understanding the specific preparation is more useful than relying on the common name alone.

The orange clubs often pictured in guides
The bright orange, club-shaped structures commonly shown in ingredient photography are associated with cultivated Cordyceps militaris. This is a useful visual reference, but an image cannot identify the material used in every product labelled cordyceps.
The exact species, source material and production method should be confirmed by a product specification. Our current Five Mushroom listing names cordyceps without declaring those details, so we do not assign a species or cultivation method to the bottle here.
Use the illustration to become familiar with one form of cordyceps, while reading the product label for the formula you are actually choosing.

Fruiting body, mycelium, powder and extract
Mushroom labels can combine several kinds of information. Some words describe the fungal material; others describe how it has been prepared.
- Fruiting body: a reproductive structure produced by a fungus.
- Mycelium: the network of thread-like growth that forms part of the fungal organism.
- Powder: a physical format; check whether the label means milled material or a dried extract.
- Liquid extract: a preparation in a liquid medium, with its own serving directions.
A powder and a liquid tincture should not be compared spoon for spoon or drop for drop. Even two liquid extracts may differ in their source material, ratio and other ingredients.
Our cordyceps-containing tincture is a blend of five mushrooms. It is not a single-ingredient cordyceps preparation.
How dual extraction fits into our blend
The Five Mushroom Dual Extract is described as a water-and-alcohol extraction. Its ingredient list brings together reishi, chaga, lion’s mane, cordyceps and turkey tail mushroom extracts, alcohol and purified water.
“Dual” describes the use of both extraction media. It does not mean double strength, and it does not declare the quantity of a particular mushroom compound.
The listing also does not state that the mushrooms are present in equal amounts. Five names on an ingredient list do not establish a 20% share for each one.
Learn more about the liquid medium in our guide to alcohol in tinctures. Diluting a serving in water or juice does not remove its alcohol.

Explore the five-mushroom tincture →Making a useful product comparison
When comparing cordyceps products, start with the information actually declared. A useful specification identifies the species, material, preparation and quantity in the finished serving.
Keep different measurements separate. Bottle volume tells you how much liquid is supplied. An extraction ratio describes a relationship used in preparation. A measured constituent percentage requires its own supporting information. None of these can be inferred from the darkness or taste of the liquid.
Origin, organic status, suitability for a vegan diet and cultivation method also need confirmation for the specific product. A general description of cordyceps does not establish them.

Using and storing the finished tincture
Follow the directions printed on your bottle and do not exceed the labelled amount. Shake gently as directed and measure the serving using the product’s instructions rather than copying a dose from another extract.
Store securely closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Keep the dropper clean, replace it after use and retain the label and batch details.
The product listing advises seeking appropriately qualified advice before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when taking medication or under medical supervision. Check suitability for the full five-mushroom formula.
This guide explains ingredient terminology and product formats. It does not provide instructions for gathering or identifying wild fungi.
