What is chaga?

Chaga is the common name associated with Inonotus obliquus, a fungus best known for the dark, irregular growth it forms on birch trees. Its charcoal-like surface looks very different from the familiar cap-and-stem shape of a culinary mushroom.

The growth commonly pictured and collected as chaga is a sterile conk, rather than the fungus's spore-producing fruiting body. This distinction helps explain why chaga looks so different from reishi or lion's mane.

From woodland ingredient to prepared blend

Chaga has a place in traditional northern European and Russian preparations, including drinks made from the gathered material. That history is part of the wider interest in mushrooms and fungi within natural wellbeing routines.

Today's products can take quite different forms. Dried pieces, powders, liquid extracts and fermented multi-ingredient blends are not interchangeable. Preparation, serving instructions and the rest of the formula matter as much as the ingredient name.

Our chaga-containing products are finished blends. They are not raw chaga pieces for home brewing, and neither should be treated as a single-ingredient chaga product.

Dual extraction and fermentation explained

The Five Mushroom Dual Extract Tincture uses both water and alcohol in its preparation. The formula combines chaga with reishi, lion's mane, cordyceps and turkey tail, with alcohol and purified water listed as the liquid ingredients.

“Dual extract” describes the use of two extraction media. It does not automatically mean double strength, nor does it give a measured amount of chaga or any individual constituent. The current listing does not declare equal proportions for the five mushrooms.

Sustain is a different type of preparation: a liquid live-culture blend with a broad ingredient list that includes chaga. Its fermentation process and complete formula should be considered separately from the mushroom tincture.

For more background on liquid preparations, read our guide to alcohol in tinctures. Diluting the mushroom tincture in water does not remove its alcohol.

Sustain probiotic

Chaga is one of the ingredients listed in Sustain alongside live microbial cultures, herbs, juices and minerals. The listing also names shiitake mushrooms. This is a broader formula, rather than a dedicated mushroom extract.

Its ingredients include organic malt from barley. Read the full current label and allergen information when choosing it for your routine.

What to look for on a chaga label

Start with what the product actually contains. A name on the front of a bottle does not describe the entire preparation, and a dark colour cannot tell you its concentration.

  • Ingredient identity: look for the mushroom name and any material specification supplied.
  • Preparation: distinguish dried material, powder, extract and a fermented blend.
  • Declared quantity: check whether an amount refers to chaga itself or to the complete mixture.
  • Other ingredients: consider alcohol, cultures, botanicals and allergens across the full formula.
  • Directions and storage: use the instructions for the particular bottle you have.

Origin, harvest method, extract ratio and constituent percentages should come from product-specific information. We do not infer them from a general ingredient description. If you need a detail that is not listed, contact us before ordering.

Adding a prepared blend to your routine

Keep the original packaging so that serving directions, batch information and storage advice remain available. Follow the current label and do not transfer a serving size from another mushroom product.

For the Five Mushroom tincture, the listing advises shaking gently and storing securely closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, out of reach of children. Follow Sustain's own label for its storage requirements, including any instructions after opening.

Review the suitability information for the whole blend, particularly during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when taking medication or under medical supervision. The tincture listing advises seeking appropriately qualified advice in these circumstances.

An ingredient guide helps you understand a formula; it is not a wild-foraging identification guide. The illustration shows the general appearance of chaga rather than a specific batch used in our products.

Chaga questions answered

What is chaga?

Chaga is the common name associated with Inonotus obliquus, a fungus known for dark, irregular sterile conks often found on birch trees.

Which of your products contain chaga?

Chaga is listed in the Five Mushroom Dual Extract Tincture and Sustain probiotic. These are different multi-ingredient preparations.

Is your mushroom tincture pure chaga?

No. It combines chaga with reishi, lion's mane, cordyceps and turkey tail, with alcohol and purified water.

What does dual extract mean?

In our mushroom tincture, both water and alcohol are used for extraction. The term does not specify a chaga percentage or mean double strength.

Is Sustain the same as the mushroom tincture?

No. Sustain is a liquid live-culture blend with a wider ingredient list that includes chaga. Use each product's own directions and storage advice.

Does the five-mushroom blend contain equal amounts?

The current listing does not declare equal proportions. Five named mushrooms should not be interpreted as 20% of each.

For complete ingredients, allergens, suitability and directions, read the current product label. A guide to one ingredient does not describe every possible effect of the finished preparation.
