Cacao butter
Theobroma cacao butter
Explore cacao butter, also called cocoa butter, and the richness it brings to our Gold Face Cream and Mango Lip Balm.
What is cacao butter?
Cacao butter is the pale botanical fat obtained from cacao beans, the seeds of Theobroma cacao. It is also commonly called cocoa butter. On a cosmetic ingredient list, look for Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter or Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter.
In skincare, it is used as an emollient: an ingredient that helps skin feel softer and smoother. Its solid, buttery character also makes it useful in rich cream and balm textures. Cacao butter is distinct from cacao powder, so the two names should not be used interchangeably.

Richness, structure and glide
Our Gold Face Cream brings together several butters and oils, each contributing to the finished texture. Cacao butter is included for body and glide, alongside murumuru and kokum butters. This is a rich facial moisturiser, so it is best approached a little at a time.
The feel of a finished product comes from the complete recipe. A cream containing cacao butter will not necessarily feel the same as pure cacao butter, and a lip balm containing it will have its own consistency. The other ingredients, their balance and the way the product is made all shape that experience.
When choosing between products, think about where you want to use them and the finish you enjoy. The ingredient name is a useful starting point, but the product’s intended use and full description offer a clearer guide to what belongs in your routine.

Understanding the ingredient list
Our face cream uses the name “cacao butter”, while the lip balm’s ingredient list uses “Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter”. Recognising these names makes it easier to spot the shared ingredient without assuming that the products are otherwise alike.
In the Gold Face Cream, cacao is one of three named butters: murumuru butter, kokum butter and cacao butter. The formula also lists meadowfoam seed oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil and black seed oil. Kokum is its own ingredient; it is not coconut butter.
Our Mango Lip Balm combines cocoa seed butter with castor oil, sunflower seed oil, mango seed butter, coconut oil, apple fruit extract and hemp seed oil. Its name highlights mango, but the complete list reveals the wider botanical blend.
For the most useful comparison, read those lists side by side. A shared butter does not mean that two products have the same fragrance, texture or intended application.

Using a butter-rich formula
For the Gold Face Cream, begin with a small amount on clean, dry skin and massage gently over the face, avoiding direct contact with the eyes. If you prefer a softer texture, warm a little between clean fingertips before applying. Add more only if needed; a rich formula does not need to be applied in a thick layer.
Keep the Mango Lip Balm for its intended lip-care use and follow its label instructions. The presence of the same botanical butter is not a reason to swap the two products’ uses. Each is a complete blend with its own ingredients and purpose.
When introducing something new, give yourself time to see how the whole formula suits you. Check for ingredients you already know you do not tolerate, and stop using a product if it causes irritation. A natural origin does not make every blend suitable for everyone.
Keeping the texture at its best
Our Gold Face Cream’s botanical butters and oils can change in consistency with temperature. A cooler room may leave it firmer, while warmth can soften it. Store the jar in a cool place and avoid direct sunlight or excessive heat, as its product directions advise.
Keep containers closed after use. For a jar, take out what you need with clean, dry fingers or a clean spatula, and avoid introducing water. Adding water or extra oil to soften a product changes the prepared formula.
Follow the storage instructions for the lip balm too. If a product develops an unexpected smell or appearance, pause use and contact us with its details rather than relying on texture alone to judge its condition.
Cacao butter: your questions answered
Are cacao butter and cocoa butter the same ingredient?
In skincare, both names refer to the fat obtained from cacao beans. The cosmetic ingredient name is Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter. The name alone does not tell you whether a particular butter is refined, unrefined or organic.
Is cacao butter the same as cacao powder?
No. Butter is the fat from the cacao bean, while cacao powder is a different material. Our Gold Face Cream lists cacao butter, not cacao powder.
Which Crystal products contain cacao butter?
Our Colloidal Gold Face Cream and All Natural Mango Lip Balm both list cacao or cocoa seed butter. Check their individual product pages and labels for the complete ingredients.
Does the Gold Face Cream smell of chocolate?
The cream is described with neroli and frankincense essential oils, giving it floral and resinous notes. The presence of cacao butter does not mean a finished formula will have a chocolate scent.
Why can a botanical cream feel firmer in a cool room?
The consistency of a blend of butters and oils can change with temperature. Our Gold Face Cream may feel firmer when cool and softer when warm. Store it as directed and warm a small amount between clean fingertips before applying if preferred.
Can I use the face cream as a lip balm?
Choose each product for its intended purpose. The Gold Face Cream is facial skincare; the Mango Lip Balm is the product in this guide made for the lips. Follow the directions on the relevant label.
