What is MSM?
MSM is the short name for methylsulfonylmethane, a compound containing sulphur. You may also see it written as methyl sulphonyl methane or described as dimethyl sulfone. The different spellings can make labels look more complicated than they are: these names refer to the same ingredient.
MSM is commonly presented as a white crystalline material. Within our range it appears both as a standalone crystal product and among the ingredients in Sustain probiotic. Those formats offer different ways of presenting the ingredient and have their own directions.
Start with the complete product rather than the abbreviation alone. Its ingredients list tells you whether you are looking at MSM on its own or MSM as one part of a wider blend.
Understanding the sulphur connection
Sulphur is part of MSM’s molecular structure. That is why descriptions often call it a sulphur-containing compound. MSM is not the same material as elemental sulphur, and products containing different sulphur compounds cannot be treated as interchangeable.
You may encounter the phrase organic sulphur. In chemistry, organic refers to a carbon-containing compound; the term alone does not establish agricultural organic certification. Source information and certification are separate details to look for in the product specification.
Another useful distinction is quantity. A label stating a weight of MSM is describing the whole compound, rather than the same weight of sulphur alone. Read the ingredient name alongside the number when comparing different preparations.
Crystals, powder and ingredient identity
Crystals and powder describe physical presentation. A finer powder and a more visibly crystalline material can both be methylsulfonylmethane. Particle appearance by itself does not establish purity, source, suitability or the amount to use.
Our standalone product is listed as 100% methylsulfonylmethane and sold as MSM crystals. The current listing describes purification by distillation. That is a processing detail, rather than a different ingredient name.
For any specific sourcing question, use the current product information or contact us for the details you need. An illustrative image can show the general character of crystals, but cannot demonstrate a batch’s composition or testing.

MSM and DMSO: understanding the names
MSM and DMSO are often mentioned together because their chemistry is related. Their full names make the distinction clearer: MSM is dimethyl sulfone, while DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide.
They are separate materials. A direction written for one cannot be transferred to the other, and a product should always be used according to its own intended purpose. Keep the original labelled packaging so the identity remains clear.
The same principle applies to sulphate salts and other ingredients with sulphur in their names. A shared element does not make two products equivalent.

MSM is also named in Sustain’s ingredient list, alongside live cultures, herbs, juices and minerals. This is a blended liquid with its own formula and directions. Its liquid serving is not equivalent to a serving of standalone MSM crystals.
Explore Sustain probioticCheck the full ingredients and allergen information for the product you choose. The presence of MSM in both products does not mean they need to be used together.
Reading the label and storing your crystals
Check the named ingredient, intended use, serving and storage instructions before opening a new pack. Where an amount is given by weight, use the appropriate measure; a scoop from another product or an ordinary household spoon may hold a different quantity.
Keep the crystals dry and the packaging closed. Use a clean, dry utensil, store away from splashes and keep out of reach of children. Follow the expiry information on the pack. A liquid blend such as Sustain has separate storage directions, so do not apply the crystals’ instructions to it.
MSM can cause digestive upset or skin reactions in some people. Stop if it causes a reaction. Check suitability with a qualified healthcare professional if you take medicines, have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not exceed the pack directions.
Common questions about MSM
What does MSM stand for?
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, also written as methyl sulphonyl methane. Dimethyl sulfone is another name for the same compound. These names identify the ingredient rather than a particular brand.
Is MSM the same as sulphur?
MSM contains sulphur as part of its molecular structure. It is not elemental sulphur, and a stated weight of MSM is not the same weight of sulphur. Always compare labels using the named ingredient and units.
Are MSM crystals and MSM powder different ingredients?
Both descriptions can refer to methylsulfonylmethane. Crystals and powder describe the physical presentation. Check the full ingredient list and intended use rather than identifying a material by its appearance.
Is MSM the same as DMSO?
No. MSM is dimethyl sulfone; DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide. They are related but distinct compounds. Their directions and intended uses are not interchangeable, so do not substitute one for the other.
Which Crystal products contain MSM?
Our MSM Crystals product lists 100% methylsulfonylmethane. MSM also appears in the ingredient list for Sustain probiotic, where it is one component of a blended liquid formula. Follow each product’s own directions.
How much MSM should I use?
Follow the serving printed on your current pack. This guide does not supply a separate dose. Do not transfer a serving from another brand, a different product format or a research study.
