Three-Day Fasting: Questions for a Holistic Approach

Fasting has a place in spiritual and wellbeing traditions.

Fasting has a place in spiritual and wellbeing traditions. Interest in a three-day fast often centres on clarity and an internal reset. Those intentions need to be kept separate from a promise that 72 hours without food renews everyone’s immune system.

What does an immune reset mean?

The immune system is a changing network, not something that can be switched off and restarted on a timetable. Research into fasting and cellular processes does not establish a universal benefit from a three-day fast.

Understanding cellular recycling

Autophagy describes cellular recycling processes. It is part of normal maintenance and is influenced by many factors. There is no simple sensation or home checklist that confirms a desirable level during fasting.

Consider the whole person

Usual food intake, medicines, daily responsibilities, health history and your relationship with food affect suitability. Feeling faint, exhausted or unable to function is not evidence of cleansing.

When extended fasting is unsuitable

Prolonged fasting is unsuitable for children, pregnancy or breastfeeding, people who are underweight or have an eating-disorder history, and many people with ongoing conditions. Diabetes and medicines affecting blood glucose need particular care. Do not undertake a prolonged fast without individual professional guidance.

A nourishing reset can include food

Regular meals, fewer rushed snacks, comfortable hydration and time to sleep can create a practical reset. Preparing satisfying food and an unhurried evening supports wellbeing without a three-day restriction.

Questions to ask

What specific goal are you trying to meet? Could lack of sleep or inadequate nourishment explain how you feel? Will this affect medicines or an existing condition? Fasting should not replace care or delay investigating symptoms.
